Grand Finale! Partisanship through laughter

KB4K 2011 AdeuriAs you looked across the crowd, you saw a distinct commonality; smiles.  Behind these smiles are the children who call Cabarete home.  They share the same passion that we all we all have for life; friends, family and Mother Nature.

Blue skies, huge smiles and raising money

Friday Action EliasOn the morning of the second day of the competition the sea remained heavy as the northeast swell continued to bombard Cabarete.  The breaking wave estimate was 5 feet with short periods of no more than 7 seconds.  If riders were going to be able to get out past the surf, they were going to need a decent amount of wind.  The wind did not come up in the afternoon, but there was plenty of fun to be had.

KB4K 2011 FridayThe morning was a little cloudy; not the sky, but the water.  5ft barrels zeroed in on Bozo Beach, kicking up the sandy bottom.  Their curls led the charge as the waves dumped into a mere 2 feet of water.  At sunrise the conditions proved challenging; a foreshadowing for the day’s event.  Palm trees began to rustle at 12pm and the wind built throughout the day.  The wind speed remained low at 14mph and the direction was onshore.  Competitors had to work to get out past the break.  The next step was to create some distance between themselves and the beach to allow room for their maneuvers.
